TomTom Traffic Index

Jaijit Bhattacharya, Head of the Policy Panel of the IET’s Future of Mobility and Transport Focus said “It is saddening to see that four Indian cities figure on the top 10 most congested cities in the world.

It is even more appalling to observe that we are using BRT as a traffic decongestion technique, borrowed from cities where clearly the mechanism has not worked, for example, Bogota in Colombia, which is cited as a poster-boy city for BRT implementation figures as the third most congested city in the world.

We need to identify the causes of congestion at the micro-level and come out with solutions that are appropriate for Indian cities. There are much larger cities in the world that do not suffer from the kind of congestion that Indian cities have.

Cities are the engines of growth and poorly managed traffic in cities throttle growth, besides leading to higher pollution levels.”
